Join us August 31st – September 1st, 2024, for an impactful event that promises to leave a lasting impression. Throwing Bones is excited to host the 2024 Not-A-Sprint Weekend—an extraordinary opportunity for you to show your unwavering support for an incredible cause.

The 2024 Not-A-Sprint Weekend is a powerful platform for us to rally together and make a difference. Every dollar raised during this event will be utilized to empower individuals affected by cancer, fostering their well-being and promoting an active lifestyle throughout their treatment journey. By investing in their physical and mental health, we aim to provide invaluable support and a renewed sense of strength.

In partnership with the beloved family and friends of Kirk Wilkerson, an exemplary figure in both cancer advocacy and community leadership, Throwing Bones is committed to advancing his remarkable legacy. Kirk stood as a pillar of motivation, promoting physical activity and leading initiatives in cancer education and research. Moreover, a significant portion of the funds raised will be directed towards the Kirk Wilkerson Cancer Memorial, a lasting tribute that will benefit East Rutherford High School Athletics. Kirk’s remarkable impact as a mentor and coach touched the lives of countless athletes, shaping their character and guiding them towards success. By contributing to this memorial, we honor Kirk’s dedication and continue his legacy of inspiring young athletes to achieve their full potential.

The 2024 Not-A-Sprint Weekend is more than just an event, it’s an opportunity to make a lasting difference. By participating, you act as a pivotal force for transformation, helping us create a supportive environment for cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Together, let’s celebrate Kirk’s life and accomplishments, while propelling our collective efforts towards a brighter future for patients, caretakers and the support we offer both.

Your participation and generosity will create a ripple effect of hope and healing that will resonate far beyond the event itself. Join us as we make strides towards a healthier, more compassionate world. Together, we can turn the challenges of cancer into triumphs of resilience.

Not-a-Sprint Endurance Run

This course is fast! If you’re attempting distance for time, this course is for you. Last year, we had many runners who were able to complete 50 miles in less than 12 hours. Our top runner, ran 64.05 miles and it was her first time running more than 50 miles at one time!

The race will be a 4.5 mile out and back course beginning at POPS and following the Thermal Belt Rail Trail North to Mill Town Brewing Company in Spindale, and then back to POPS. There will be one aid station at Mill Town Brewing, and one self-serve aid/H2O station in the middle of the course.

There is a measly 95 feet of elevation over the entire course and it is paved the entire way. There will be few road crossings. Volunteers will be on hand to direct runners where necessary, but runners need to be aware of their surroundings at these intersections.

The course is partially to completely shaded on about 35% of the course which should help significantly with September temperatures!

The first runners will leave the Pavilion on Park Square (POPS) at 6am. The first wave will run 12 hours from 6am to 6pm. The second wave will run 6 hours from 6:30am to 12:30am. The third wave will run 3 hours from 7am to 10am.

There will be food, water and electrolytes available at every aid station, and various food choices throughout the day. Runners should also plan on bringing their own supplies to set up near the start/finish. Space will be provided for tables, chairs and tents for runners and their crew. There will be porta potties or public restrooms at miles 0, 4.5, 9, 13.5 and so on.

Half laps will be counted since there will be timing mats at both ends!

T-shirt, goodie bag, and race bib will be given at packet pickup.
